「Are you there?」
“Are you there?” is also what we say on a phone or video call, in a messaging app or on social media, when a conversation with someone far away suddenly goes quiet: a way of checking that they are still there. Now that communicating through screens is the norm, it can be hard to tell whether anyone is truly on the other side. This work turns that experience around. Your voice, your face, your words: none of them reach her. All that reaches the copper girl is the warmth of the person touching her cheeks. Trading rallies through that warmth and building up an exchange without words, you begin to feel that someone is truly there. Having learned again through the pandemic how much meeting in person matters, we wanted to ask anew about the value of someone’s real presence before us, and of facing each other and talking eye to eye.
その体験まで含めて、この作品を「ARE YOU THERE?」
When choosing the title, we considered many names, some playing on words like “dialogue” and “communication”, others leaving room for interpretation. The one we finally chose, “ARE YOU THERE?”, simply puts into words the feeling we hope players carry away.
At first, it sounds like the girl asking you, “Are you there?” But once you have played, you find yourself sensing, before the figure in front of you, that she might truly be there.
We named the work “ARE YOU THERE?” for that whole experience.
The work itself was born of dialogue. When KamiEna and Shiomi Ryosuke first met, the only thing decided was that they would combine tankin, a Japanese craft, with indie games. Each listened to how the other makes things and thinks about making, and spoke openly in turn. Rather than leaning toward one side, they brought their ideas together and kept talking. The first meeting, planned for one hour, ran past five. “With this person, we can make something good”: both left certain of it. Then Kaneko Takeru joined, and each of the three brought ideas from their own field. Not closing themselves off in their own areas but taking in the thinking of others, they met again and again, and through dialogue and trial and error, they made this work.
