Interview

What moment from making this work stays with you the most?

The moment that stays with me most is when I first met KamiEna. Nothing had been decided, not even the concept, but even though we work in different fields, our pace of thinking and our points of view were close, and it felt like we understood each other, speaking frankly while sensing what the other meant and how much they had grasped. We kept talking for five or six hours without food or drink, and that was the moment I felt, “With this team, we could make something good.”

What was the hardest part of making it?

The hardest part was aligning, within a team, a sense of form and design that in my usual solo work had always been complete inside my own head. Putting forward my own proposals while also taking in what the others wanted and were aiming for, and looking for where they overlapped. It took me a while to get used to working this way, but because of that, I think we reached a form I could never have reached on my own.

In Kagane, what fun or value do you think came about precisely because it is “craft × game”?

In Kagane, looking at a sculpture, hearing a voice, looking into its eyes, touching metal and playing a game all happen at once. The viewer takes in far more layers than with an ordinary sculpture or game, and there is a continuity in which each touch leads to the next response. Craft and game each give meaning to the other’s elements, and their strengths multiply each other. I think the great value is that this new kind of necessity came about.

What would you like people who play it to look at, or to feel?

Please touch her cheeks and feel your own warmth slowly passing into the cold metal. Beyond that touch, the voice and the play, I hope you’ll sense Kagane, the presence inside the figure, and that a feeling of her gradually “growing warm” will emerge.

What did you feel about making a “cute girl” in hammered metal, so different from your usual work?

Until now I mostly made fierce motifs and textures in fine detail, so I struggled first of all to build, within myself, a standard of form for a stylised “cute girl’s face”. I had many doubts, whether it was all right to lean toward a doll, or whether it leaned too far toward games, and especially when designing Yuki, the first piece, I went through a lot of trial and error and inner adjustment. On the other hand, thanks to that experience, Kagane, the second piece, went smoothly, and I feel the range of forms I can make has grown a great deal.

What did you feel, or work out, in making a piece of craft whose eyes you look into and whose cheeks you touch, rather than one you only look at?

This time I thought about the form not only in terms of how it looks but also its “function for touching and playing”. To fit monitors inside the eyes, I searched for a balance that kept them big enough to play comfortably without making the face look unnatural, and I gave the cheeks a slightly childlike, plump line so you can’t help wanting to touch them. I also adjusted the mouth so that, rather than a big grin, she seems to be smiling faintly.

What possibilities did you see in combining traditional metal hammering with games?

In my usual practice, I show my work in open settings that aren’t limited to craft. That is because I believe that a work being recognised and judged simply as a sculpture, as a piece of contemporary art, helps widen the future and possibilities of Japanese craft art.

This time, by combining it with games, I strongly felt that the object could leap out of the usual frames of “metal hammering” and “craft” and develop into art and interactive expression unlike anything that exists. In Kagane, the form itself is the character, the monitor, the input device, and part of the game experience too. And precisely because craft artists mostly work alone, working in a team with people from other fields lets you meet ideas and viewpoints that would never come from yourself. I think that kind of chemistry also leads to new forms of expression and to the future growth of craft art.

最後に、Anima Ludens(フランス展示)に向けて一言Finally, a word ahead of Anima Ludens (the exhibition in France)

Arles, with its ties to Van Gogh and so much other art, is a special place in art history. I am deeply honoured to show the work in such a city. I’m looking forward to seeing how people there receive Kagane as a new form of expression born in Japan. I want to approach the exhibition with gratitude and respect for everyone who gave us this precious opportunity and for everyone who comes to experience the work.
