When I came to make a work in the field of art, I honestly knew almost nothing about art, and about contemporary art in particular. So I began by visiting museums and exhibitions again and again, encountering all kinds of works and learning, in my own way, how they are thought about and looked at. What fascinated me was the way of looking itself. With the games, manga and anime I had grown up with, you mostly take in the work in front of you as it is. In contemporary art, you don’t stop at the surface: you follow the theme behind it, its so-called “context”. What has the artist made before? In what times and circumstances, and from what feelings, did this work come about? Taking what is in front of you as an entrance, you go in, and further in, feeling out the shape of the work. For me, it was like exploring the inside of a single work.
Later, when I came to make a work with Shiomi Ryosuke, he showed me what he had made. His armour and menpō face masks are exquisitely made, carved in fine detail with feathers, scales and ornament, with an overwhelming amount of information. Yet what drew me most was the opposite: the hollow of the eyes, where there is nothing at all. Because everything around them is so finely made, the empty eyes stand out, and your gaze is pulled toward them as if being drawn in. You want to keep looking into them. The impression was so strong that it was the first thing I told him.
The feeling I had with contemporary art, of going deep inside a work and exploring it. And the feeling I had looking at his work, of being drawn into hollow eyes. Since I was making something with him, I wondered whether these two experiences could become the experience of a game, just as they were.
Look into the eyes of the work, go inside, and explore what lies within. The experience I had while looking at art would itself become the UX. From there, the shape of this work took form: looking into a girl’s eyes, and playing in the world inside them.
The other thing I cared about was what a game is as a work. A game is not complete as digital data alone: music, 3DCG, 2D assets. Players play in their own order; they grind levels before a boss, or struggle for ages to win, and each of them has a different experience. Only when the data meets a player, and is played, does the work, and its story, become complete. The experience born in between, the UX, is what I believe the work of a game really is.
So I brought in a way of playing from classic dungeon games: exploring while drawing your own map on paper. Players draw the map themselves and mark it however they like. That hand-drawn map makes visible the very experience that happened between the work and the player. I feel that this visible experience is art, and one right approach to turning a game into art. Exploring the dungeon behind Yuki’s eyes and drawing its map grew out of that idea.
